Speed Up Your Internet by Changing Your DNS Settings

Learn how changing your DNS server can improve internet speed. Step-by-step guide for Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android with recommended DNS providers.

Hello!

Today, we will look at how adjusting your DNS settings can improve your internet speed. DNS (Domain Name System) plays a crucial role when you access websites. This article explains the basics of DNS, how to choose faster DNS servers, and the specific setup steps.

What Is DNS?

DNS (Domain Name System) is like an address book for the internet. It converts human-readable website names (e.g., www.example.com) into IP addresses (e.g., 192.0.2.1) that computers use to connect to the correct server.

Why Does DNS Affect Internet Speed?

The speed of your DNS server directly impacts page loading times. A slow DNS server takes longer to resolve domain names, making websites load slower. Conversely, using a fast DNS server speeds up name resolution and reduces load times.

Here are some well-known fast and reliable DNS servers:

  • Google Public DNS
    • IPv4: 8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4
    • IPv6: 2001:4860:4860::8888, 2001:4860:4860::8844
  • Cloudflare DNS
    • IPv4: 1.1.1.1, 1.0.0.1
    • IPv6: 2606:4700:4700::1111, 2606:4700:4700::1001
  • OpenDNS
    • IPv4: 208.67.222.222, 208.67.220.220
    • IPv6: 2620:119:35::35, 2620:119:53::53

My personal recommendation is Cloudflare DNS (1.1.1.1).
